Re: X bar symbol
Does anyone know how to produce an x bar symbol in Mellel? You know, the symbol for the statistical mean - a lower case x (greek letter chi actually) with an overline or macron over it. I can't figure it out, even witth the character palette. Please help. The standard way to do macron x would be wi...

I think Nisus Writer Express can keep keyboards and dictionaries in synch. You might like to give it a look. Also Apple's Pages lets you set the spellcheck language for any particular text.Eoin wrote: Apart from not being able to switch languages ...

Re: Supported languages - Gàidhlig?
On page http://www.redlers.com/mellellanguages.html Scots is listed as being fully supported. Can someone clarify to which language this refers? Whichever one it is, the reference is to the app's ability to display and input the necessary characters, and has nothing to do with dictionaries and orth...

Thanks to all of you. Just wanted to let you know that for the time being I settled with Martin's suggestion and will use Times as secondary font. I'm curious -- Did the Times New Roman from Office2004 free trial (v. 3.05) not have the characters you needed? Mine does, will be happy to send you a c...

Re: font substitution
But the one I use apparently can't be displayed by the forum's text engine. It is the an "L" with a "strikethrough" from the Polish alphabet (Unicode 0141). Because these forums are in the Latin-1 charset, you have to use html escape codes to express anything beyond that, and th...

Re: font substitution
What special characters are you actually talking about? Surely it is not "?". Someone might have a suggestion about how to get a Times New Roman that has it for free.

Still, the point stands that you can now get at glyphs in TextEdit (and a lot of other apps) that you can't yet use in Mellel. It's a bit of a shame, especially given Mellel's early lead. Is it true that TextEdit can now use glyphs in an OpenType font that Mellel cannot? I didn't know that. Do you ...

You can get at alternate glyphs in an AAT or OpenType font in applications that use the built-in text engine, since OS X 10.3. OS X did not offer support for any OpenType layout tables until 10.4, and unfortunately this still does not include those used for non-Latin scripts as far as I know. Only ...

Re: IN RE text encoding versus font format.
Basically, Unicode-8 applies an eight digit hexadecimal number (numbers represented not with the ten digits 0-9, but the sixteen "digits" 0123456789ABCDEF) to each glyph used in any human writing system. When someone says "Unicode font," it's not really a font format they're tal...

Re: IN RE text encoding versus font format.
None of them appear to respond to to the options available under Opentype in the character appearance palette of Mellel. So, either I still don't truly understand [highly likely] or something more is needed to get these "OpenType" fonts to behave like OpenType. Unless a font contains the ...

Re: installing Keyboard layouts
Anyone know how to install the mellel keyboard layouts Keyboard layouts for all apps are put into Home/Library/Keyboard Layouts (or Library/Keyboard Layouts if for multiple users). Then you logout/login, check the box for the layout in system prefs/international/input menu, and select the layout in...

Then I exported it to '.doc' and opened it on an old Windows 98 system running Word 97. ... I conclude that this problem does not exist on newer versions of Word. Yes, I think Win98/Word97 probably can't read Unicode .rtf correctly, regardless of fonts. Anything running on Win2K/WinXP should work ok.
