DylanMc: I would say that cross-references are a necessity for the kind of word processor that Mellel purports to be. In other words, any word processor intended to handle long, academic documents should have a well-executed cross reference feature. Figures don't show up much in my scholarship, Gree...

rpcameron: Recently, I have made a concerted effort to begin using DevonThink (after trying out Journler for a month), which forced me to rethink my use of Mellel. Your original post helped me to crystalize my thoughts. Mellel, I believe, is extremely well-suited for producing text oriented document...

I suppose that I could give a very brief account of how NB works. I am by no means a NB expert, and I haven't used the newest version. I do have but just haven't put in on my wife's Windows machine to play with it. Here it is: There is a word processor and this is used for notes and documents. One c...

I should state that I really do not know enough about how DT handles XML files to say with any certainty whether what I proposed is feasible. I do know that an XML parser would be needed and I doubt that DT currently includes one. As for linking BE to DT files, I really have no idea how this would b...

I used NB to write my dissertation. I could write another dissertation on why I stopped using it, but I will spare you all of my complaints. I will note that I am far happier using Mellel, DT, and BE that I ever was using NB. The tight integration of NB is very nice. However, Mellel is a better word...

There are some OS X apps out there that handle palette toggling very well. If I recall correct all three of these drawing apps do it in the same way: Lineform, Wouldjadraw, Doodlecad. Essentially, each palette is given its own keyboard shortcut. So, one might use apple + 1 to toggle the autotitle pa...

Nevermind. As soon as I posted my question, I thought I would give it one more try. Well, of course, it's always the last thing you try, and the attempt done on a lark, that succeeds. Here is what I did, in case anybody is interested. First, I searched for 'whitespace.' Double-clicking on the whites...

Can I do this with the find/replace utility?
I would like to use the find/replace utility to first find places in my documents where I have inadvertently entered multiple spaces (e.g., between words or sentences) and then replace those two (or more spaces) with just one space. Any suggestions? I've tinkered at creating a regular expression to ...

I would like to set the default values of certain variables and have those values be retroactive. However, it is not such a big deal. I don't think that I'll ever use them for information other than my name, addresses, phone numbers. Now that they are set, I should be ok from here on out. Perhaps I ...

Default document variable values
Recently, I have begun to make use of the document variables for such information as my name, work and home addresses, etc. When I was setting the default names and variables, I forget to enter my email and website addresses. I then began a new document in order to update my CV (I also created a sty...

I now recall having read that spacing is additive in Mellel. Also, I know from experience that paragraph and line spacing are separate, but the explanation of paragraph spacing in the guide at least suggests otherwise. Perhaps that explanation could be cleaned up. I suppose that I will switch all my...

I am sure that I am missing something here. I have used Adobe's Minion Pro and SIL's Gentium fonts with the SophoKeys keyboard (freeware, I think you can get it from SourceForge) and can get diacriticals with capitals with simple keystrokes. For example A + 1 + 4 = capital alpha with dasia oxia. So,...
