That's strange. Does it work in other programs, e.g. Pages or Neo Office? It's hard to imagine that this is not a system issue. I can't find any Mellel preferences regarding sound alerts.

I don't have Lion yet so I'm afraid I can't try it myself.

I still hear the sound in 2.9 (albeit under 10.6.. It's called Funk.aiff and can be found in the System/Library/Sounds directory. Maybe you can look under System Preferences and manually instruct Lion to use this (or any other) sound.

the question is whether TE can preserve all of the data from .docx or not. TextEdit doesn't do footnotes, page numbers or track changes, although there is a workaround to insert page numbers. TE is more an editor than a word processor but still very useful when converting fairly simple docx files. ...

An even easier way of working with docx files is opening them in TextEdit and then saving them as doc or rtf files.
