That's indeed a good solution!
Hoping as well that it will be possible to implement a solution. Perhaps the possibility to enter a short version of a title which can then be chosen in the auto-title setup?

Gerben

Re: How-to shorten auto-titles in header
Just curious, is this still the only work-around or are there meanwhile other possibilities?

Re: preserving formatting when changing footnote style
Thanks, I played around also with Spark but Butler definitely looks good.

Re: preserving formatting when changing footnote style
Hi Patrick (no idea actually how I came up with Richard, well..) I realise it is part of a shift in thinking but for me there is another issue here: Cmd-B/Cmd-I are used by various programs on the Mac for the same thing> to make something bold or italicise. It seems rather counter-intuitive to retra...

headers with chapter titles
Yet another question (it's thesis sumbmission time so the formatting work begins :? )..... I am figuring out how headers work (with mentions) and it is mostly clear to me. But one thing I cannot find in the manuals and video tutorial: is it possible to apply headers at once to the whole document if ...

Re: preserving formatting when changing footnote style
Hi Richard, Thanks, I noticed indeed this his been quite exhaustively discussed before. I can understand there are technical differences involved but I think that from a usability point of view this could be implemented differently. A user preference could be a solution (so one can choose whether or...

Re: preserving formatting when changing footnote style
Hi Thomas, Thanks for the elaborate answer. Just discovered Spark a minute ago actually :) I found that the "replace styles" option is the quickest way to solve the problem (and thankfully less work than I thought). (In case the Redlers are reading along: would be nice if assigning formatt...

Re: preserving formatting when changing footnote style
Thanks rpcameron, I use keyboard commands so that is part of the problem.
But I notice that this also happens with documents imported from Word. I started my dissertation in Word so half of the footnotes were formatted there.

preserving formatting when changing footnote style
I am currently preparing a print version of my PhD and I use different style sets for working on the computer and for printing. I notice that when I apply my print style set to the document and then change the note formatting (via the note attributes) I loose italics, bold, etc. The change is from a...

Re: Cross references and URL
Since when is the presence or absence of a feature in Word a criterion for being for or against a new feature in Mellel?
I think it is high time discussions such as these focus on the features themselves and the ritual Word bashing is left behind.
Peace,
Gerben

Re: ToC - consecutive numbering
Hi Thomas,
Thanks again for the help. I had fiddled with the "previous level" element but did not realize I simply have to insert it multiple times to get this result. Excellent!

ToC - consecutive numbering
I am running into antoehr ToC issue. I have meanwhile figured out formatting and aligning page numbers with tabs. But one thing I can't get right and I cannot find it in the manuals: how do I tell Mellel to continue numbering like this> 1. Chapter 1 2. Chapter 2 2.1 Overview and aims The problem is ...

Yep I saved the style. I agree that preferences difer but this one is so obvious that it should be easier than fiddling with tabs. This really could be much more user-friendly, imho...

Re: how to (right) outline page number in ToC?
Thanks Thomas, this is it! I saw the thread but now I understand one has to fiddle with the tabs to get it right.
I love Mellel but why are such obvious things as this not the default or at least a one-click option?
