Feature request: architecture for plugins in Mellel

Although I continue to find the combination of Mellel and Bookends far and away the best choice for academic writing, I increasingly find myself needing to export my writing into Word in order to run checks on it using services such as Grammarly, ProWritingAid and PerfectIt (to mention only the Engl...

Producing clickable DOIs in a PDF

The latest guidance from the Modern Language Association is that DOIs are to be preferred to URLs whenever they are available, as they are more likely to still be accessible many years from now. I've been collecting DOIs as I go along and have set up a format in Bookends that will output the DOI rat...

Re: Embedding fonts in a PDF

Thank you both for these helpful responses to my question. It seems to make sense that what is meant is that the subset of each font that is actually used in the document is embedded in the PDF rather than the whole font. But it probably is worth sounding out the university administration on this po...

Re: Find and replace formatting

Yes, this should be possible with Find and Replace - here are the steps: Open the Find tool and click the inverted triangle to open up the extended Find and Replace view Click the triangle beside the Find field to select "Any Character" Click the triangle beside the Replace field to select...

Embedding fonts in a PDF

I'm preparing for electronic submission (as PDF) of a doctoral dissertation that was written in Mellel. My university's guidelines state that "Fonts must be embedded in the PDF file. This ensures all characters display correctly when printed and preserved." There is some additional guidanc...

Re: Double-spacing between footnotes

I think I have managed to figure this one out. When I edited the Paragraph Styles for my note text, I was able to toggle the Line Spacing units from lines to points to see what one line was equivalent to in points in my document (1 line = 14.4 points). I then stumbled upon this nugget of wisdom on a...

Re: Double-spacing between footnotes

Thanks Icelander. Fortunately the final submission is as a PDF, so I don't have to worry about conversion to .docx or any other format. You are absolutely correct that it's possible to approximate this fairly well by visually comparing the gap between lines versus the gap between footnotes, and this...

Re: Double-spacing between footnotes

Hi Icelander - thanks for taking the time to put together those screenshots for me! The issue is a little more complex, as I need the footnotes themselves to be single-spaced, with double-spacing between each footnote. If I understood the directions you gave me correctly, they will result in double-...

Re: Just for fun, what is your longest Mellel document...

I'm working on a doctoral dissertation which is currently around 85,000 words, with a large number of citations, cross-references, and footnotes. In my experience, Mellel 4 can handle a document of this length without any perceptible impact on performance. I have, however, noticed that as the docume...

Double-spacing between footnotes

My university's style guide gives the following guidance for spacing: Spacing throughout body of text: double spacing. Spacing for block quotations, footnotes, and bibliographies: single spacing within each entry but double spacing between each entry. I am having some difficulty figuring out how to ...

Re: Organize Bibliography

Assuming that you are using Bookends for bibliography management, I think you can achieve this by using the "Subject Bibliography" option, selecting "Reference Type" as the subject (see user guide p. 338).

Re: Bookends: Exclude authors and title parameter

Thank you Icelander, and sorry that I didn't notice your reply sooner! This issue was caused by a bug in one of the versions of Bookends that has since been corrected.
