Re: Working on the iPad vs. the Mac

Thanks, ealvarez, for these comments. I wandered into my local Apple Store over the weekend and had a look at the iPad Pro with keyboard built into the case. I could imagine getting some serious work done in split screen mode on one of those.

Working on the iPad vs. the Mac

I do almost all of my writing on a MacBook Air using Mellel and Bookends in combination with research tools such as DevonThink. The MacBook Air is light and compact enough to be reasonably convenient bringing it to libraries and elsewhere. The battery life is also good enough to be able to get throu...

Re: No page number on first page of each chapter

Hi Icelander - thank you! You clearly went to lot of trouble to help me out, and I appreciate it. The two steps I needed to take to replicate what you had done were: - In title flows, insert page style break before each chapter - with pages 2 - end selected, de-select the "Start At" button in the At...

Re: No page number on first page of each chapter

Actually, I have two page styles in my document: one is for the front matter with pagination in Roman numerals, the second is for the body of the text, with pagination in Arabic numerals.

Re: No page number on first page of each chapter

Thanks for this pointer, Icelander! 1. Open your Page style from the Page palette and tick the "Different first page" box in the lower left corner. Then 2. Insert "Page style break" from Insert -> Breaks after each chapter. I think I must be missing something here. When I open the Page palette and s...

No page number on first page of each chapter

Is there any easy way to tell Mellel not to show a page number on the first page of each chapter?

Re: auto text

For what it's worth, I'm using Typinator with Mellel and am happy with the way they work together. I am just using Typinator as an auto-correct tool, but I believe that it's capable of much more. I haven't used the glossaries feature of Nisus, but perhaps this can be replicated in Typinator? To answ...

Re: Citation with author named within the paper

If it's a once-off case, the easiest thing is to enter the "Create Temporary Citations with Modifiers" dialogue window (by pressing Command + CTRL + Y in Bookends), select "No enclosing punctuation" and enter "Lukina et. al " in the "Precede citation with the text:" area. Which style are you using, ...

Re: Citation with author named within the paper

It's straightforward if your format doesn't require you to have the year in parentheses - in this case you could use the * symbol to specify No Enclosing Punctuation. So depending on how you have set up your citation options in Formats Manager you should have: "Lukina et. al 1999 showed that..."

Thoughts about Replace Styles

I've been finding the Replace Styles feature a little bit difficult to use - I wonder if anyone else has the same experience? Specifically, I used this feature recently to globally change the fonts I am using throughout my document. For the most part, this worked smoothly, but the old fonts still sh...

Re: Anyone else using Bookends and care to comment?

Thanks for the input, ealvarez and Icelander! To respond: ealvarez: I have opened a support ticket and am waiting on a reply from the good folks at RedleX. I thought it would be useful to know whether these problems are specific to me, or if others are also experiencing issues. Icelander: Thank you ...

Anyone else using Bookends and care to comment?

I have a quite long and complex document, which I've been working on in Mellel + Bookends for some time now. Recently, I've been experiencing intermittent problems with the formatting instructions sent from Bookends not being followed when the citation is copied over into Mellel, e.g. where a book t...

Re: Problem with iCloud Drive sync with Mellel for iPad

I finally figured out what was causing this problem: I had two directories that I was using for Mellel, one created by the app itself called "Mellel" and another I created in iCloud Drive called "Writing". Selecting my document by navigating to "Writing" in iCloud Drive on the iPad produced an error...

Understanding "Synchronize Database"

I have a Mellel project which is linked to a Bookends bibliography. After doing some work on cleaning up my references, I tried out the "Synchronize Database" command, and saw that it restored many of the old versions of my references to my Bookends database (which I was able to remove easily, as th...

Re: How to resume the counting of Level 1 heading?

Have you tried doing this with Title Flows in the Auto-Title area? One Title Flow to contain the two parts of the document, and a second title flow below that with numbered sections and the "Reset numbering with higher level flow" box checked.
