Have you tried in the 'note attributes' to play with the option 'may separate from reference' and 'may split'?

Mellel 5 and docx
I was delighted to receive Mellel 5 and to see that it finally has the long awaited feature of converting into docx format. Today I needed it to submit a paper, where the editor, (of course don't they always), demanded Word. I ran into the following problems: 1) An *-note at the beginning was transf...

It all looks great, but what is really important is export to .docx

Re: Mellel + ePub - your thoughts and requests
a) No. I have for many years used Mellel for editing the classiscs journal AIGIS (http://aigis.igl.ku.dk/aigis/) which is in Scandinavian languages only. I use Mellel for in-house editing. Most articles I receive are, of course, in .docx and the import into Mellel is now very good. I then send out p...

Re: Help with Find and Replace
Oh yes, in German and French they put the punctuation after the note reference, in English and Danish, before. And then, of course, there are all those who just do not know where to put it. I have been correcting this sort of thing manually for years, for I have never found a way in Mellel. If you h...

Re: replacing paragraph styles
I have been doing the sort of thing you mention for 20 years and I still have to change the format of each paragraph manually. Change styles works fine, but you cannot know which style you are changing, since all styles in the imported docx file are anonymous. And you have to go over the text to re-...

Which reminds me how nice it would be if the promised exporter from Mellel to docx would finally appear. I need it almost every day.

Re: Exporting TOC to PDF
The TOC must be created in Mellel 4 in order to work in pdf. Could that be the explanation in your case?

Re: character style that preserves subscripts/superscripts
This is a serious problem. I have found that the best way to solve it is to use, not the position, but to use the specified subscript/superscript figures. You find them in the unicode section Digits - all. When you write yourself, it is easy (you can put these digits in your favourites), but it can ...

crossreferences
I have come across a curious problem which I do not understand: I want to refer back to a footnote 7 in my manuscript, so I put a bookmark there, and in note 57 I insert a crossreference back to this note. In the little window, I can see that it is well understood which note I want, but when I inser...

Re: How to make indentation in footnotes consistent?
The only thing I can think of is, that you are nevertheless using two different note-styles. Not paragraph-style in the note, but note-attribute. Go to "insert>note>edit note attributes" and then look at "note symbol - format". The solution must be there.

Re: Page smaller than it should when printed
Janet is right, of course. I know the problem well, but it can be difficult to get rid of. Try View (at the very top of the window) and see if Annotation Pane is engaged. If it is, turn it off and your problem disappears. If, at any time, you write a comment, the View Annotation Pane will be turned ...

May I suggest the excellent tutorials furnished by Mellel? At the top of the page you are looking at there is an entrance called 'learn'. That would be a good place to start.

Export to docx
The joys of using Mellel have always included the problem that nobody else does. For many years the solution has been to import and export via RTF and it has worked well, if the text was not too complicated from a lay-out point of view. The introduction of docx did not make our lives easier, but rec...

Re: High Sierra "not optimised" warning
I got that warning as well, and it concerned the Installer-program, not Mellel itself. It was a warning that the Installer was not 64-bit and would not run on later versions of Mac OS. After the warning, the installer installed and all was fine. So unless it is a hoax you need to update your install...
