Re: Another table layout question

I have page styles for front matter (page numbers i, ii, ..), main text (page numbers 1, 2...), and main-text horizontal. If at a point in the main text I want to have a horizontal figure or table, I insert a page-style break, go to the new page, do a couple of carriage returns, and insert another p...

Re: Facing a new decade

Responding to Sani, 1. Footnotes. This is controllable in Edit Note Attributes (a selection under Insert Notes). 2. Captions. I have auto titles for figure and table captions. They work well. I probably am misunderstanding what you mean by captions. 3. Styles. Yes, this is a problem. 4. Tables. Yes,...

Re: footnotes in files exported to rtf

If for some reason, one is labeling footnotes with *, dagger, etc., rather than numbers, then restarting each page is preferable. A rationale for that is when footnotes are used only for, e.g., definitions, while endnotes are used for all other kinds of notes (citations, elaborations, etc.).

Re: How do Mellel users take notes?

When writing a paper or book in Mellel, I create a separate note stream called "Author notes" in red font. These notes may be reminders, discussion of subtleties, and even "tricks" used for figures, formats, exports, Word compatibility, etc. I delete such notes as the manuscript matures, although so...

Fixes in Export to Word

A number of users have urged achieving "good" export to Word as a priority. I agree. That might be a herculean task, but my guess is that fixing a finite set of problems would go a very long way. It might be useful to Eyal et al if we collect known problems. Here is my list. I have not established t...

Re: Copy Citation (Bookends)

Thanks. You're right about Live Bibliography. Yes, I've rebuilt the Bookends library and are using the same apps and versions on both machines. All the several ways of invoking Copy Citation have the same results The new-account experiment yields nothing now, but I will try it again next time the pr...

Copy Citation (Bookends)

As a public-service announcement, sort of, let me describe a problem I've had and a very clunky "solution." Perhaps this will help others and perhaps someone will tell us how to deal with it better. Problem: on my iMac, but not my MacBook Pro, both using Mojave, Copy Citation often doesn't work for ...

Publishing in New ACM Format

The ACM has revised its formats within the last year or is still in the process of doing so. Do other Mellel users have any experience with this? Is there a new Mellel template for ACM?

Update on Export to Word

A chronic problem for Mellel users is exporting to Microsoft Word. Various earlier posts have addressed the issue over the years. The export from Mellel to rtf still has a number of problems, which carry through to a Word document. Currently, I find that my best option is to export from Mellel to pd...

Table Notes

Mellel doesn't advertise the ability to have table notes, but it is sometimes possible. Define a note stream, Table Notes. Specify that the notes appear "After text." Specify that renumbering starts with each new section Then, when inserting a new table in which one wants to have table notes, put th...

Re: Tables in Mellel 4.2

Many commands (e.g., merge) are now reachable via the little gear icon at the bottom left of the table palette. As for applying styles or templates, you have to create them. Then, when you add a new table (Insert/Table), you will see options in the popup interface. It works very neatly. The user gui...

Keeping figure and table auto-titles above

Sometimes, a figure heading or a table heading (tag flows) will jump to be below the figure or table, rather than remain above it, as intended. What is causing this and how do I prevent it? This often happens if I delete what appears to be an extraneous carriage return between, say, the graphic and ...

Re: Round trip editing equations with MathType

I agree, but the workaround is easy: (1) set the Cut and Copy preference in MathType to pdf (check a box at the bottom) and (2) copy and paste from MathType to Mellel. You can discard the MathType file because the equation can always be edited by copying it back from Mellel to MathType. If you paste...

Index Building

I'm only beginning to use the nice index feature, beyond some initial experimentation when it was first introduced. I am musing about things I don't know how to do, or are not currently possible. Automatic Marking. We can select an index record, switch to the text pane, and use Find to find all inst...
