Re: Cross references and paragraph styles

Insert Reference on the Reference Palette, Cross Reference on the Insert Menu, or double clicking on an existing Reference will bring up the Edit Reference Window. When that window is open and you click into the field at the bottom displaying the layout of your reference, a new option appears on the...

Re: Decimal Tab and alignment

I’m not sure what you mean by “ignoring” the comma. Mellel is a word processor, not a spreadsheet. It doesn’t automatically format numbers, so it won’t automatically add a comma after the the thousands place of a number large enough to call for one. You’ll have to physically type any commas or curre...

Re: character style that preserves subscripts/superscripts

I’m not completely sure what you’re trying to do, but this may help. Each Mellel Character style includes specifications for all possible Character attributes. Character attributes you don’t explicitly set while defining or redefining a particular Character style are inherited from the Base Characte...

Re: Finalizing a document - how to deal with citations?

I think I can see a possible justification. Styles like MLA undergo small changes over time, changes Bookends reflects in its updates. Suppose you’ve got a long document you work on over a long period of time and maintain using Live Bibliography. Without something along the lines of rescan on open, ...

Re: Keyboard text shortcuts in system preferences

I'm not much of a techie myself, but Mellel doesn't use Apple text services and hasn't had to work around its various longstanding bugs. I've had good luck myself using Typinator for this sort of thing.

Re: Finalizing a document - how to deal with citations?

In my limited experience you can edit text scanned into your document by Bookends just as if it were regular text, as long as the document remains in its scanned state. I suspect you'd simply lose your edits if you did a subsequent unscan but I haven't checked this, so try things out on a copy of yo...

Re: Accepting Changes Incrementally

NO. Accept All or Reject All applies to changes throughout the entire document, whether or not there is a selection when you choose it. And although you can select a stretch of text containing multiple changes or select multiple change bubbles in the Annotation panel, when you do, the Accept and Rej...

Re: Find Sets - prompt before replacing?

My impression is that there’s an important difference between individual Find Actions and the complex Find Sets that run a sequence of Find Actions one after another. With an individual Find Action, you can load it and then take your pick of Replace All, Replace & Find, Next, and Previous. This give...

Re: A call for tables

My own priorities in descending order: 1. Getting the navigation shortcuts in line with prevailing practice in other apps. 2. Ability to insert new rows and/or columns and remove old ones anywhere within the structure of an existing table. 3. Some provision to designate special rows and/or columns a...

Re: Text wrap around table

Right now the only elements around which the main text of a document will wrap are text boxes and images anchored to a particular location on a page. And right now you can't create a table within a text box. So the answer to the first question is no. Mellel does allow the insertion of images into ta...

Re: Character attributes in cross-references

I don’t know about 2013, but this isn’t a problem now. You can set up new reference formats and edit new ones using the Edit Reference dialog (Insert > Cross Reference > Insert Reference). General instructions for doing this are in Chapter 11 of the manual. What the manual doesn’t explicitly say is ...

Re: Govern Auto-Title Length by Character

What a bizarre rule. Anyway… Mellel can’t stop you from composing a heading that is longer than 48 characters. But if all you need is a quick way to see whether a heading or auto-title you’ve just written satisfies the requirement as it stands or instead needs to be shortened, you can write with the...

Re: Mellel 4.1: Disable "Welcome to Mellel" Panel at startup

I don’t think so. Here’s my understanding. If there were documents open when you last quit Mellel, Mellel restores them and doesn’t give you the Welcome box. But there seems to have been a deliberate design decision to make Welcome open on startup, giving you easy access to both your templates and y...

Re: Problem with Italic

Puzzling. A lot of this sounds as if you might have accidentally redefined the Base variation in the character style associated with BodyText, so that the Face it produces is now Italic instead of Regular. But in that case you shouldn’t be able to get from Italic to Regular in your first BodyText pa...

Re: Getting rid of residual citation markers

Dear Joseph, First, have you put in a support request on this? If the problem turns in any deep way on the 4.0.1 bug and how it was fixed, they’ll be the ones who can help. Second, how did you formulate your search and replace? The reason I ask is that a Mellel citation isn’t a bit of text surrounde...
