Misplaced diacritics

I have a problem with combining diacritics not being placed correctly. I am using Mellel 2.7.1 and OS X 10.5.8. With some fonts (Times Regular) the combining diacritics are so far to the right of the modified letter that they appear to be over the following letter. With others (Minion Pro) they just...

OK, I looked at things closer (using FontExplorer X).

The character I want is a glyph variant (glyph ID 1923), but I don't know what it is a variant of (must be in some OpenType table), or how to access it in Mellel.

Non-unicode characters

Is Mellel expected to support non-Unicode encoded characters? Specifically, I need to use some non-standard diacritics in Charis Pro. So far I have resorted to using TextEdit.
