I tried Service Scrubber. Apparently no other service was using this shortcut. I disabled almost all services (I don't use most of them), but the problem is still there.

Perhaps the lower box should only be editable when you check a checkbox, "Retain Formatting On Rescan." Then Mellel would only use the field information in the upper box to re-construct the bibliography, and it would leave the in-text formatting in place. This suggestion of Bryce does see...

But when I want to insert new text at the end of the line, appended to the last word, I put the cursor (with the mouse) directly there, and the text gets appended as in your second example: ...using NEWTEXT <space> Times... Consistency with Compact view would then mean that they should leave one only horizontal line, perhaps.

Well, I have the page number displayed in between, and a light visible line before it, so another line would be too much.

I think it depends on the font you are using.
With SBL Hebrew or Cardo I just type a normal qamets or shwa after final kaf and it is located there (where it has to).

Or perhaps I am misunderstanding your question...
