Re: Mellel 3.0 and Sente

Are you on OS X 10.8.2? Could this be the same problem as discussed on this thread on the Bookends forum? My experience is the same as reported on that thread: logging out and back in again fixes the ability to use Cmd-y to shift between Bookends and Mellel, inserting a reference. Presumably the fix...

Re: Character Spacing

True, it's not possible. Well-designed typefaces and ones with different optical sizes (e.g. these ones from Adobe) certainly make the lack less glaring, but there are times when good typographic design requires letter-spacing: most times small caps are used, for example. See Bringhurst, quoted at t...

Re: Missing comments: How do you that?

I posted already on the other thread, but seeing your -- perfectly correct -- objection to footnotes for comments, I would advise using Mellel's coloured markers to highlight text that needs rewriting. That's what I did when writing up my PhD in Mellel. I used different colours for bits that were ju...

Re: Feature Request: Comments

Still no comments, really? How do you all work-around that? I used to use ordinary, in-line text with coloured markers for this. You could also set up an extra stream of footnotes and use those for comments. Lately, I find myself using Scrivener to write, and Word to make comments on other people's...

Re: Is Mellel scriptable?

No, sadly not.

You might be able to automate the application of character styles using Find actions built up into a Find set. That won't work for sections, auto-titles or paragraph styles, though, because the Find and Replace function cannot impose any of those.

Re: Paragraph style for lists?

In a way, though, isn't this a separate issue from the question of whether lists should come with paragraph styles? Or at least, it's a question that comes up outside of that context. For example, I have four different paragraph styles for numbered examples -- to get right the spacing between them a...

Re: Find all by formatting

Eyal: I agree that translating the styles+names would be nicer. It would be really great for Word files, but it wouldn't help with the OP's problem, because Scrivener doesn't produce named styles in its rtf output. Replace styles does enable you to do what you want as long the formatting is indeed d...

Re: and on to 3.1

It would be nice to be able to see the word count for a section without having to select the text. The best, I think, would be to have live word counts against items in the outline pane, but perhaps that would slow things down too much. A second-best way of doing this would be to have the word count...

Re: Referring to images – URGENT (thesis deadline)

Not hopeless at all. Mellel has excellent cross-referencing, and it's easy to do this (once you know how). You are using auto-titles for the figure captions, so you can insert cross-references in your text to produce 'fig x' where x is the number the auto-title system has given to the figure caption...

Re: doc and docx import

I suppose the problem is that Mellel is relying on the very limited doc and docx convertors supplied by Apple with the operating system. Scrivener used to too, and had similar anaemic support for doc and docx imports, but in its latest update this is much improved by the use of third-party Java conv...

Raymond: I thought you were asking for separate help with the forum interface. If not, no problem.

Eyal: thanks for the detailed explanations. This is all very elegant and works beautifully.
