Re: Cross references and paragraph styles
Thank you DavidH! This is exactly the solution I was looking for.

Cross references and paragraph styles
I wonder if there is a way to specify that a cross reference should take on the paragraph style of the text around it, rather than that of the bookmark? I noticed that when I insert a reference to a chapter, the reference appears in the large font I am using for chapters with auto-titles and there i...

Bookends: Exclude authors and title parameter
I have noticed that when I generate a citation in Bookends using the "Exclude authors and title parameter [&]," the citation is correctly passed to Mellel (i.e., I can click on the citation and see that it begins with &), but for some reason Mellel is showing authors and title anyw...

Re: Suggest best approach to linked content?
I think I would create a new database in DEVONthink for the purpose and drag the chat logs you have into it (the software can deal with documents in many different formats). You can give each document in the database a name that makes sense to you (e.g., based on the date) and order the documents in...

Re: Suggest best approach to linked content?
I wonder if you are familiar with DEVONthink? It might be easier to keep track of individual chat transcripts as part of a database than as a word processor document. There is an excellent companion application for iOS so you could read and work on the transcripts on your iPad.

Re: Finalizing a document - how to deal with citations?
As far as I can see, the only way to avoid this is to have live bibliography turned on from the very beginning. Live bibliography seems to make re-scanning obsolete; and as long as there is no re-scanning, the manually performed changes will stick. Thanks for your input, Icelander. I think that wit...

Re: Handling of URLs in bibliography
Thank you Icelander. The MLA has guidance somewhere with regard to URL shortening services - the recommendation is that they should not be used, as there is no guarantee a particular service (like Bitly) will be around in the long term. The exceptions are things like JSTOR stable links and DOIs, whi...

Re: Finalizing a document - how to deal with citations?
Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread with suggestions. I've made some progress and would just like to respond to a few points. First, thanks for the information that it is possible to simply manually edit the citations produced by Bookends. I had somehow missed this feature up to now. How...

Re: Handling of URLs in bibliography
Thanks for sharing your workflow, Icelander! It is very good of you to take the time to put together this write-up. I'm constrained for the moment by the MLA Style Guide's recommendations for dealing with URLs, so I won't be able to follow your advice in full this time round. If you're curious to se...

Finalizing a document - how to deal with citations?
I have a long document that I have put together using Mellel and Bookends. When I output to PDF, everything looks excellent, except for a few minor details with my citations that I would like to clean up manually. For example, in some places I mention the name of the author to whom I am referring in...

Handling of URLs in bibliography
I'm using Bookends and Mellel to generate a bibliography and am providing URLs for the materials I reference wherever possible. In some cases, the URL comes at the end of a line and is splint into two parts. This is fine from a visual point of view, but has the side-effect that the URL is broken. Of...

Re: Toward a Sneaky Way To Export Better to Word
My testing is less exhaustive than the other posters above, but I have been having good resulting exporting to .doc in Mellel, importing that file in Nisus Writer Pro and then exporting from NWP to .docx. The results looks pretty good.

Re: Suppressing page number on second page
Brilliant! That's an elegant solution that doesn't involve creating new page styles, which is what I wanted to avoid.

Suppressing page number on second page
I wonder is there any way to suppress page numbers on the second as well as the first page of a section? I'm using a style guide that specifies that both the title page and the copyright page should be counted as p. i and p. ii but that the page number should not be printed on them (it begins, obvio...
