Footnote editing problem

Has anyone seen this issue? I'm working on a large (200+ page) document with many (500+) footnotes. At some point recently I stopped being able to see the I-bar when I go into a footnote to edit it. That is, the I-bar appears in the right place when I first click there, but if I use the arrow keys or try to move the I-bar with the mouse, it doesn't visibly move (although the cursor does actually change position: if I type, the type appears in the correct spot). This doesn't happen with test documents (new document, add a footnote, test the I-bar). Running Mellel 2.2.5.
