Well, here we are.
After going through the previous steps, my Spotlight returned Mellel-functional.
That meant: it found content in previously created Mellel files.
I thought: great, resolved.
I was wrong: upon creating a new Mellel file, the new contents are not indexed. Upon opening older Mellel files, that content is lost (in my user account: no probs in my admin account).
Looks like I'll be scheduling weekly Spotlight re-indexing at night.
