Checking spelling in selected text

Why checking spelling in a selected text doesn't work? Am I missing something?

I know that Ctrl+click gives you spelling options for a selected text, but If you select text and then go to spelling no options are listed, and program starts the spelling from the beginning of the document not from the selected word like in MS Office. I know that Pages has the similar issue.

For me it works. Select a portion of the text, then go to Edit > Spelling > Check Spelling in Selection. The spell checker then checks that portion of the document.

Also...what about adding support for the pretty much system-wide function of Control-Command-d while your mouse is placed (but not clicked down) over a word to pull up the dictionary and thesaurus for that word.

I find this very convenient, rather than having to visit the Dictionary app.
