Automatic adjustment of styes

I know that this works, and I have done it before, but I must have the wrong setting somewhere. If I change a style (e.g., change a heading's font or increase the chapter heading style so that the title is followed by a larger gap before the first paragraph or next heading), the changes should just ripple through the manuscript. This is not happening. I can force the changes to occur by using the outline and CTRL to change the item to another heading level, and then move it back. However, this shouldn't be necessary. I suspect a bad setting.??? Thanks in advance.
