Figured out how to use Davka fonts on a Mac!

Post by bluesdance »

If you download FontForge and open a DavkaWriter TrueType font, it turns out that Davka put all the Hebrew letters in the part that's supposed to be foreEnglish letters. Silly Davka. If you select the alphabet from א through ת you can cut and paste it to the Hebrew range starting with 05d0.

I guess this is how you handle all old Windows Hebrew fonts that aren't Unicoded.
I haven't tried this with vowels yet, so I don't know how or if that works. My pressing need was for a "Stam" font to put on the left side of a tikkun page, and I had the Davka Stam font with great-looking letters, but I couldn't use them! And now I can. hooray

I won't email the results of my work to anyone because of piracy issues -- these Davka fonts are commercial products -- but if you are trying to do this process and have questions about how I did it, contact me.

Check out this sample page that I created using Mellel, SBL Hebrew "Balagan," and "Stam Hot" aka Davka Stam Unicode.
