Applying Character format to a reference - bug?

I have several references to chapter titles placed in body text a bit like this:

Chapter 1: What's the point? describes the background to the research project.
Chapter 2: How I did it describes the methods used.
Chapter 3: What I found out describes the findings of the study.

So the bits in bold above are references, pulling in the chapter numbers and titles. I want them to appear different from the main body text, just as they do here. Trouble is, I cant get the formatting to 'stick'. I can apply bold to the reference, but it appears (and prints) as plain text, even though it says 'Bold' in the format palette.

Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

Applying a font variation to a cross-reference title/format: is indeed a bug (you can vary using the non-sticky bold/italics, but somehow the font variation defined for the autotitle cannot be changed in the cross-reference). The bug has already been reported (it typically does not affect CR to page numbers, e.g.).
