TEL AVIV, ISRAEL — September 15, 2009 — RedleX today released Mellel 2.7, a major update to its leading word processor for Mac OS X.

Mellel 2.7 adds support, among others, for floating images and wrapping text around images, and does it the way such image handling should work in a word processor: fast.

"The main problem with floating images and wrapping text around images is that they tends to slow down any application considerably,” says Eyal Redler, RedleX's CTO. “This is not a problem with page layout applications, where people expect the precision of a Swiss watch, and accept that it will require them to have the the patience of Swiss watchmaker. If it’s very-very good, it’s expected very-very slow.”

But such slow performance is not acceptable in a word processor. "To keep Mellel going fast, we had to rethink and rewrite parts of Mellel," Says Redler.

It worked. Mellel 2.7 is still the fastest and sturdiest word processor around, and offers smoothest experience working with images. As a bonus, the major changes allowed RedleX to introduce several other new features, and add some long asked-for features.

Mellel 2.7 introduce 20 new features and enhancements, and adds a host of bug fixes and mini-improvements. Following is a summary of the most important among those:

* Floating images: Mellel now supports having floating images (alongside inline images) in documents. It also offers an Arrange menu to order the images when they are one on top of the other.
* Wrap text around floating and inline images: allows users to force text to flow to the right, to the left, on both sides, skip, etc. around images. Users can also control opacity and the extra spacing around images.
* Background image: One can now assign a background image to a page range, controlling its opacity and position in the background.
* Snow Leopard compatible: Mellel 2.7 (as well as Mellel 2.6.2) are compatible with Mac OS 10.6.x (Snow Leopard).
* Object palette: allows easy control of many Image attributes (and will later allow control of other graphic and text objects).
* Insert before: allows users to automatically insert a Return, a page break, a column break, etc. before a heading in the text.
* List separately in ToC: allows you to set if figures, charts, images, etc. will be listed as part of the Table of Contents or separately.
* Reset numbering: allows you to set if the numbering of a heading will be reset or not with a higher level heading. This is useful, for example, when you have a book divided into parts, but want the chapter numbers to be continuous throughout, and not reset with each part.
* Keyboard navigation in tables: The arrow keys (with or without the Cmd key) can now be used to navigate inside a table, into it and out of it.
* Other improvements: Auto-titles (headings) in Mellel can now span more than 6 lines and can start anywhere in a line; The Page palette and dialogue are easier to work with (and look nicer); and much more.

Mellel 2.7 is a free update to all registered users of Mellel who've purchased Mellel after August 2007. Users who've purchased or updated Mellel earlier can purchase an upgrade (US$19). The upgrade includes two years of free updates.

On the download page (http://www.redlers.com/formdatadl.html), the description of Mellel is 2.6 and not 2.7. It says, "Mellel 2.6: Server 1 | Server 2 | Server 3 | Server 4"

You will need to update that to 2.7..

Cheers,
Steve

For some reason the auto update does not work for me.
It downloads the update, I get a dialog box saying it will run the installer and restart Mellel, it exists Mellel, and then nothing happens. No Installer, no newer Mellel, I cannot even locate the update file myself.

Any ideas?

XXXX

Correction - this was weird, since the problem fixed itself after 10 minutes.

I think what happened was that I got no status feedback on the update being performed. Restarting Mellel gave me 2.6.2. again. After several minutes, restarting Mellel brought up 2.7. So it may simply be a status notification thingy that confused me.

Thanks for noting that. It is fixed now.

The Beginners Tutorial for 2.7 is also out in both Mellel and PDF. The blurb at the Redlers' site still says 2.6 and bears the date of 2.6, but the actual Tutorial text is in fact for 2.7 and has a September 2009 date, so you can download it without fear, what you actually download is the new 2.7 version.

The "competitive comparison" page is obsolete too (pre 2.5).

Hi,

Just tried to update from 2.6.2 to 2.7. It downloaded fine, then I tried to open it and was told that 'the application could not be opened because it is not supported by this computer's architecture'. I frantically tried to find a way to downgrade to 2.6.2, couldn't find any information on your site, and then reopened Mellel to discover it had somehow auto-downgraded...

So luckily I can still use Mellel, but would have liked some warning or information in advance that Mellel 2.7 is not compatible with my system (iBook G4, OS X 10.5.8). Or is it? A quick scan of release notes and forum did not give me any clues.

Yours,

Paul Gill

Paul,

Mellel 2.7 should work on a PPC machine. Try downloading the whole thing from our site (www.mellel.com) and then try to run the program from the disk image (which means there's no risk of erasing your current copy of Mellel).
It looks to me as if there was just a problem with the upgrade process which caused it to stop working on PPC

Hi,

I have a maybe stupid question. Ich downloaded 2.7. and shall put it into "applications", where all the programs are. But: There is already a mellel (of course). So just replace it? But I´m German... would I receive the english version?

Dylan

No, it will display its dialogues in German. All proper multilingual OS X apps have the ability to display their interface with the language that is selected by you as the standard language for OS X – the time when you had to download different versions of an application for different language is (mostly) over.

So you can just drop the new version into your "Programme" folder and replace the old one. Things will be fine and in German :D

Thanks Eyal,
That did the trick. So I don't have to buy a new MacBook after all :-(
