Small Caps in Citations - Bookends?

Post by the_DZA »

Dear All,

I have seen this issue briefly in a previous thread, but it didn't go anywhere so I'm trying afresh:

If I am using MHRA format (http://www.mhra.org.uk/Publications/Boo ... load.shtml) I am required to list the volume number of multi-volume works in small caps.

ie. Karl Marx, The Poverty of Philosophy in Marx & Engels Collected Works (London, 1976; 1847) VI: 166

Where the bold figure, 'VI' is in small caps.

It doesn't seem possible to set Bookends to produce the volume number directly into small caps. However, is there a way of doing this in Mellel? I can't think of a suitable find-and-replace string and am left doing this manually for each reference, opening the dialogue box, deleting the existing number and manually re-entering it using the character variation I have created to be small caps.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to simplify this? Is there a Bookends solution?

Many thanks
Daniel

You don't state whether you contacted BE support about this issue . . . you may have and there may be no way to tweak BE, but the BE support is excellent . . . and Jon will usually have some ideas about how to solve your issues . . . ???? So you should contact him if you haven't already.

But, on to Mr Mel . . . you should be able to use the Find and replace function to fix the problem (I haven't checked though to see if it's cap sensitive) by going to the Bibliography, opening Find window and putting the Caps version in the find box and the small letters in the replace with box???

I usually start off by stating the obvious . . . there is of course the old fashioned way . . . just manually changing the items . . . in Mellel . . . one at a time by looking with your mind, etc. : - ))))

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I've been in touch with Jon, but wondered if anyone had found a good workaround for this. Find and replace searching for 'I' produces hundreds of results in my 1000+ footnotes, and doesn't solve the problem of finding every volume number I have used at some point (ie. I, II, III .... XXVII....etc).

Hi,

Mellel has a great automated find / replace system just for bibliography entries. You can find it under preferences / bibliography. Make Bookends produce the volume number in bold italic underline, or something suitable unlikely. In Mellel preferences, make "bold italic underline" become a particular paragraph / character style of your choosing. In your case, this style would specify small caps.

Voila.

As mentioned below - you can narrow the search and replace to citations only.

Thanks Dylan & Redlers,

This was the kind of 'tagging' I had in mind to aid a find/replace. I'll give it a go. As I mentioned to Jon at Bookends, it would be wonderful if Bookends references formatting could be set to map directly to a chosen Mellel character style or variation. This would give much better and more powerful integration.

Best wishes,
Daniel

Hello,

I found this old thread on SmallCaps in citations with Bookends + Mellel, through mapping. We are getting very close to this requested feature, since Mellel allows to map most Character formats to any custom styles. What I cannot map yet is SmallCaps. Bookends "sends" smallcaps to Mellel, but there is no option to map them to a custom font style.

It seems a quite simple option to add, right Eyal? ;)

thanks, but it doesn't solve this problem. Font mapping is up to Mellel, not to BE.
BE sends text to Mellel with SmallCap format but it has to be mapped to yout font format for SmallCaps in Mellel as well. Otherwise it is lost when you make changes in Mellel. I don't know how to explain it better...

Sure! We are planning to add this to Mellel 3.3, coming soon.
