Printing & track changes margin line

Post by ahankinson »

Hi,

When showing the "final" version of a document with changes, a thin grey line appears in the left indicating that changes are there, but hidden. This line is also present when printing a copy of the page. I cannot seem to find a way to hide that line without turning off "track changes," which then forces me to accept all the revisions.

Am I missing something? I'll gladly file a bug report if this is something that needs to be fixed, but I'm just not sure if I'm missing a checkbox somewhere.

Thanks,
-Andrew

You're not missing anything. The revision marks or bubbles are always visible when you're in TC, regardless of the view mode (Final, Show changes etc.)

Perhaps I'm missing something in the implementation, but what was the reasoning behind showing the mark indicating there are changes, even in the printed document. This seems to be asking for a "draft mode" or similar when printing which will shows the marks indicating a change, and a normal printing mode that does not print the line.

However, I think I must agree with the OP that printing the mark is a bug, or at least an undesired result of the current implementation.

The idea here is that you still want to see some indication to the modifications you've made. We don't hide the bubbles if the pane is visible, for example.
Maybe we should hide the revision marks in final mode. I would also love to hear what other people think regarding this issue.

I'm quite in favour of the current state of things. The same comment also holds for "original" view: you'll also have the sideline markers (and the bubbles in the annotation pane). It's indeed useful to compare various stages of documents and I find myself switching ever so often between printed stages in "original" view and "final" view.

It might perhaps be specified as a "preference" in the Mellel print preference menu - as "print vs. hide track change marginalia?"

I would be in favour of an option in the print dialog that says "Print Revision Indicators" (or something a little clearer) similar to the "Print Markers" option there, and (preferably) off by default. Having a line that indicates there are hidden changes in the Mellel document on the static PDF or paper version doesn't really give you any more information -- there may be changes there, but you can't see them or do anything about it.

Alternatively, you could not print them in "Final" mode, but do print them in "Final Showing Markup" mode. That would make sense too. "Final" says to me that this is what your final document will look like once all the changes are made.

I like the print setting option. We'll consider this for inclusion in an upcoming version

An old post but I'm not sure where things stand on annotations in print or otherwise...

I suggest providing options for the following:
- show/hide annotation marks (including comments) while viewing doc (kind of like an invisible) - the little yellow boxes around the words annotated
- show/hide annotation marks (including comments, side pane, and yellow box) in printing (kind of like showing or hiding highlights)

For highlights (which I see as related to annotations and tracking changes), here's a thought:
- show/hide all highlights (like an invisible) while viewing doc (kind of like an invisible)
- show/hide all highlights pane (like the annotations pane on the left - with text and color there) while viewing doc
- allow for sorting options (by color)
- allow editing of colors
- allow for default colors to be selected (from Apple's color pallet - like a font color)

Thanks!
