Putting a ; character in a reference comment

Post by drleper »

I'm having a problem including a semi-colon in some custom text before a reference. If I put this in the reference window (Edit Citation);

Code: Select all

\my text \Wells and Quinlivan, 2008, Law and Human Behavior, 33, 1-24
then reference scans properly on looks like this;
(my text Wells & Quinlivan, 2008).
which is normal.

However, if I include a semi-colon in my reference text;

Code: Select all

\my text; \Wells and Quinlivan, 2008, Law and Human Behavior, 33, 1-24
then the reference doesn't scan correctly and looks like this;
(text; Wells and Quinlivan, 2008, Law and Human Behavior, 33, 1-24).

So in other words, I can't seem to use a semi-colon in some custom text before a reference. Is this a bug or am I doing something stupid?

Thanks.

btw, I am scanning to APA 5th style.

Are you using Bookends or Sente? It might very well be the responsibility of the bibliography app to get this stuff right.

I'm using Bookends. Could be a Bookends bug?

Could be. How about asking on the Bookends forum?

Hi,

This is a function of Bookends, not Mellel. Bookends will treat the multiple citation separator as the end of a citation, even if it occurs in "quoted text". The solution is to either use some other appropriate punctuation, or to change the multiple citation separator that Bookends uses to / or * in Bookends preferences (Scan & Bib tab).

Thanks Jon, changing that option sorted it out.
