superscript and Bookends

I have recently started using Bookends (after being an EndNote user since version 2), and am consequently learning to use it with Mellel. I have a couple questions.

1. I have tried setting the preferences in Mellel to use specific paragraph styles for Bookends bibliographies. However these seem to not be applied automatically. I have to select the relevant paragraphs and change them manually. What am I doing wrong?

2. superscripted characters are coming from Bookends generally fine. However, when I change the paragraph style in Mellel (see #1 above), the superscripting is removed. To avoid this, I created an Opentype superscript character style in Mellel, which I apply by the "replace style" command in Mellel. This works fine (that is the character style is applied, and the character is an Opentype superscript), but as soon as I apply the paragraph style, the character style is stripped out and again I loose the superscript. How can I avoid this?

Thanks!
