New Palettes

Post by KevinR »

Though Mellel is a wonderful multilingual program, and I have used it steadily for Arabic, Ottoman, and mixed language work, I have never liked nor ever understood the styles options. I found them opaque and unintuitive, and I have complained about them several times in the Forum.

I am obliged to say that with Mellel 3 you guys have really solved the problem. The new palettes are true to your, uh, distinctive vision of how styles should work, but are also clear, comprehensible, and powerful. I went through a translation file and fixed all of the ugliness that had lived there because I couldn't figure out how to fix it. Easy!

So, thanks for your imaginative flexibility and for this terrific program.

I'm really grateful. Now using Mellel is really a pleasure to use.

Thanks. I'm really glad the new UI helped you figure this feature -this is exactly what we were aiming for.
I wonder if other readers of the thread have similar experience. I'm also very curious about the specifics, if you can elaborate.

It's hard to explain either the negative or the positive. I only know that when I wanted to change something I couldn't—and I flatter myself I'm not computer incompetent. I use LOTS of different word processors without a problem. And now: I can make the changes. Something about having it all gathered in the palette on the side.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. But, hey! It works.

I like the idea of the palettes, but on a 13" MacBook Pro, they really SUCK! It's not so much the lateral space (although you can't run them, plus the navigation sidebar, plus a page view on a 13" screen), but vertically they can't stack neatly without the bottom items being tangled up with the dock. Once that happens, you can't use the bottom options, let alone see what they are, because the dock takes precedence.

I have to keep hiding the palettes and selecting one at a time when I need them, which sort of defeats the purpose. But the idea is good, I guess you can't please everyone :(

We plan to give more loving care to the small screen users soon. In the meanwhile, note that you can put all the palette in one stack which can fit in the smaller screen.

Thanks. I just watched your YouTube presentation on palettes, and now I have a lovely, concise single palette. Great work, and thank you.
