Cursor disappears and no formatting in tables

I'm running Mellel 3.2.4b2 on OSX 10.8.5.

I have a problem with the cursor in tables. On first click on a cell the cursor appears though it does not blink as in normal text. On second click on text in the same cell it disappears though I can type at the location. If I then click on another cell and then go back, the non-blinking cursor reappears.

I am also not able to visibly select a body of text in the cell, eg. to delete or format it. It is possible to select text invisibly using option-shift and arrow keys.

Finally, paragraph and character styles and attributes are not available. I am unable to apply any text formatting to table text.

It looks as though the document had got mangled in some way. This is the first time I've used tables. I copied everything into a new document and the problem seems to have corrected itself.
