New implementation of Find

Post by rwg »

Does anyone else find the new implementation of Find annoying? Previously, if the Find window was already open and you wanted to do another search, Command + F would take you back to the Find window. Now, if the Find strip is open and you press Command + F, the Find strip is closed and you have to press Command + F once again to reopen it. Is this a "feature" that I have failed to understand or just poor implementation?

Pressing command+F while the find strip is open closes it. I think we may have overlooked something here since you might want to keep the strip open while you have focus on the document and in this case command+F should move focus to the find strip and not close it. We will fix this soon.

I agree that the new setup is confusing. I regularly press Cmd+F to start a search only to find out that I have closed the find panel which was already open. Maybe a different shortcut for closing the panel would be better.

We have received some suggestions regarding this - mainly to allow the Esc key to be used here (except when in full-screen mode, where this probably should be Cmd+F to close.

Thanks for looking into this. On the same subject, how is Scroll to Selection supposed to work? As far as I can see, it seems to do nothing.

Scroll to selection worked when I tested it. Can you describe the sequence of actions you're taking?

In the Find window, after having typed in a search term and pressed Return to initiate the search, I then either select Scroll to Selection from the Find submenu or press Cmd+J, but nothing happens. I am assuming that I should be taken to the search term in the document.

When you enter a search term and press return, Mellel automatically selects the found text and scrolls to show the the selection. At this stage, choosing "Scroll to selection" should produce no visible effect since the said text is already shown.
What did you expect to happen?

I suppose I didn't really understand what Scroll to Selection is supposed to do. What I would like is a keyboard shortcut to switch the focus (cursor) from the Find strip back to the document.

Ok, I understand what you're saying. We will think about this for 3.3.1

I agree with the difficulty with the ⌘F mechanism for find... after a few weeks I still default to ⌘F, which closes the Find command bar if it is open, and then I type my find phrase into the document somewhere. I thought my brain would adjust but not yet. Better would be a different command to close the find bar and ⌘F always goes to the find dialogue.

Mellel 3.3.1, released today, contains a change in this regard.
When pressing command+F, Mellel will open the find strip, if not open, and focus on the find field, if not already focused on.
When pressing command+J, Mellel will close the find strip, if open, and focus on the document, as well as scrolling to show the selection in the document.
In short - command+F to show the find strip, command+J to hide
