What's this space?

I am getting a strange space to the left of my "page" which is included in the pdfs that I generate as if it were an additional margin area. What does this mean, and how is it resolved?

That one took me a moment as well. It is the space where comments, outline structure &c are shown. At the very bottom, left corner of your Mellel workspace, there is is an icon imitating a page with a column of text to the left. Click that, and the nuisance disappears - and can be called back again if and when you need it.

Fantastic. The nuisance was not so much what I showed in the screenshot, but that that space was reproduced in pdfs. I'm not sure why I didn't work that out for myself: perhaps the fact that I hadn't been using the commenting feature, so it didn't occur to me that the space for possible comments might get printed out.
