Mellel & Bookends: problem with footnote delimiters?

I wrote my PhD using Scrivener and Bookends. I used the {} as delimiters for the Bookends citations. I then exported this to RTF format so I could do the final polishing using Mellel, hoping to scan the document etc using your advanced bibliography features. But Mellel isn't recognising my citations. I tried reading around a bit in the Mellel support materials, but couldn't find an answer to my question. Can you help? How do I scan my Mellel document if it won't recognise the citations?

Edit -> Bibliography -> Convert Text to Citations.
