Recurring spinning beach ball problems

Post by monstordh »

I am running the latest Mellel (3.5.1b2). I've been using Mellel for years and have never had much of a problem with it at all. All of the sudden today, however, I'm having all kinds of problems. Just about any time I try to do something (open Mellel, cut text, open a new doc, etc.) I get a spinning beach ball that can last anywhere from a few seconds to literally several minutes. At first I couldn't even open the app, because it would just sit there and show the spinning beach ball for more than 5 minutes. I rebooted my computer twice to try and flush out anything that may have been hanging, but still had similar problems. I was finally able to start it up by allowing Mellel to forget about my open doc windows, but this still took a while. And even then I had the same problem when cutting text and opening a new doc. I looked for a Mellel preference file that I could trash, but couldn't find one. Any suggestions as to what may have all of the sudden started happening and how to resolve?

Two posts above yours, there's a thread dealing with the same problem. It contains a temporary solution that might work for you, until the Redlers can come up with a real fix for the problem. I posted this in case you missed that thread.

Thanks, but I don't think my post and the previous post are related. First, my files are very small (the largest one I've tried opening is 225KB). Also, my HD is pretty new - just a few months old (and it's a hybrid drive, which is pretty quick). Last, it even happens when I try to open a 15KB file. It literally took 5 minutes to open. I've been using Mellel for years and never had any similar problem, no matter how many files or applications I had open. Mellel has always been extremely responsive. This behavior just started this morning.

We need to figure out what's causing this hang, in order for us to do this we need to sample the computer while the ball is spinning. Please try to gather the sample (see instructions here) and contact our support (http://www.mellel.com/support/) and attache the sample.
To gather a sample do this:
a. Run Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor)
b. In the Activity Monitor window, locate Mellel (you can type "mellel" in the "Filter" field at the top right of the window)
c. Click the Mellel line in the activity monitor window
d. In the cogwheel menu, choose "Sample Process"
e. After sampling, save the sample and send it to us.

Make sure to perform the sampling while Mellel is actually busy spinning the beachball... (or at least make sure there is some occurrence of beach balling within the sampling time)
