Is there any news about Mellel version 4? Date of release? What's new?

Sorry, I can't find the email with information about new features in Mellel 4.0. It will, however, have indexing available.

"Soon" is a subjective term. But after purchasing an upgrade in December, I was hoping to see it "soon." Perhaps I need more patience.

You're most welcome. Found the email, which is posted below.

MELLEL 4.0 AND BEYOND!
Mellel is now a veteran word-processor - It's been in the market for almost fourteen years. This is the right time to re-invigorate it, break new grounds, and expend its capabilities.
Mellel 4.0 will play a key role in the regeneration of Mellel, introducing a host of new features that we believe will awe you, and even better: will cause you to think: why didn't anyone else think of this?
Return to Upgrades
But before we get into all this: Mellel was always an upgrade product. That is, when you've purchased it, you got a license that allowed you to update Mellel for free for a limited time (in most cases, two years). In 2011, we've decided to change course, and for a while offered lifetime upgrades. We now believe this was a mistake, that did not benefit you, Mellel users, and did not benefit us. We intend to change course and re-install a for-pay upgrade policy.
A for-pay Upgrade policy is fairly simple: when you purchase Mellel, or if you've already purchased Mellel, your time-stamped license will allow you to get free updates for two years. Beyond that, you'll be able to keep your copy of Mellel and use it (and download fresh copies of that version) but to get to the latest version and two more years of free updates you'll need to pay an upgrade fee.
If you purchase an upgrade to Mellel now, you'll get two years of free updates! That is, a free upgrade to Mellel 4.0 and beyond. We try to be fair as possible, and so even if you've purchased or upgraded Mellel before this announcement (i.e., a month ago or a year ago) you'll also get two years of free updates, which will also allow you to upgrade to Mellel 4.0 for free.
Should you upgrade now? In many cases, the answer is yes. If you're testing Mellel, or if you're an existing registered user, purchasing or upgrading now is the safest way to go, allowing you worry free transition to Mellel 4.0 and beyond.
We will add some details and specifics about upgrades on our site in the near future.
Important note: Users who received a "life-time free upgrade" promise will NOT be required to purchase an upgrade... A promise IS a promise.
What's in Mellel 4.0 and beyond?
Mellel 4.0 and beyond (some features will be rolled-out with Mellel 4.1, 4.2, and so on) will introduce a mix of ground-breaking new features, a huge number of updates and enhancements to existing features, and a much needed interface overhaul.
Index: Mellel 4.0 will introduce a revolutionary indexing tool, that goes beyond anything now existing with any other application. Essentially, you'll get all the features you can now find with top-of-the-line index-creation applications (which sell for USD200, by the way), but with the flexibility of live text, quick marking within the text, auto-marking (e.g., of any related term), and so on. In addition to all those, you'll be able to create multiple indexes and move items back and forth between them, add comments, and images, tag icons and mark index items, manage items by drag-and drop, and more.
A New Interface: This will probably the most evident change with Mellel 4.0, and we hope to get it a step beyond just changing the appearance of Mellel, introducing usability enhancement (for styles, saving, filters, easy organising of sets, and so on.
Topics: Mellel 4.0 and beyond will introduce a new, revolutionary new feature of topics. Using topics will allow you to organise your work not just chronologically (e.g., by headings in the document) but also by topics) but also by subject-matter, by characters or cited sources, locations, and just about any other way you wish to organise your document. In addition, you will be able to organise your document by time, turning your outline to a timeline. We cannot promise we'll have all the features ready for 4.0 (some of them seem a bit iffy at this point), but we'll get them all gradually.
Legal Numbering (done right): Here we plan to offer legal numbering with a twist. That is, not simply having the options, but making the writing of legal documents a breezy, automated experience, with emphasis on minimal hassle.
Outline redux: Mellel's Outline is one of its strongest features... And it's going to become much stronger, with an outliner-like interface for quick outlining, adding comments, icon tags and markers to auto-titles and tag levels. With upcoming updates to Mellel the outline will enable you to organise items not just as a list, but also in a story-board fashion, and other methods.
Captions: Another feature we plan for Mellel-the-next-generation are smart captions to images (and probably other items), including multiple captions, captions above, below, to the left and right (e.g., when you need a regular caption, but also a credit caption), and much more.
And much more: There are many more features we plan to introduce with the upcoming versions of Mellel — some are new, some are most-requested fixes, and some are simply meant to catch-up with the times and with features that got left behind. Some of the hi-lights here are: expended import and export options (docx, ePub, html), a smart auto-replace, revamped and modernised tables, shapes, filters for enhanced internal-search options (e.g., with cross-references). vastly improved character style options, enhanced footnotes and endnotes, and much more.

I'd still like to see the "Secondary Font" option expanded to allow different fonts to be assigned for different Unicode ranges within the one character style. That would allow me to have specific Hebrew and Greek fonts embedded automatically within my paragraphs!

On december 18th, tomorrow exactly four months ago, I was among those who purchased an upgrade to Mellel 4, which was then offered at a special price, and said to come available "soon". "Soon" of course is a relative concept, and the new upgrade will introduce (as we were told not four but some six months ago) "a mix of ground-breaking new features, a huge number of updates and enhancements to existing features, and a much needed interface overhaul". This of course is an awful lot of work, so no complaints about the delay of the upgrade as such.

But in the last six months, there has been complete silence about how things are going: no newsletter, no message on this forum, no blog, nothing at all. And this is something I frankly don't understand, given the fact that this new upgrade has already been sold to a number of people. Who sells something without delivering, after that should at least keep his clients informed about how things are going and what they can expect. Or so it seems to me.

Well, the silence has not been complete: http://forum.redlers.com/viewtopic.php? ... d6e0a30ac6

Hopefully, Mellel 4 is waiting around the corner.

Well, yes, but that message implies only that version 4 "is coming". And that's something that has been generally known for at least six months. So nothing new.

I'm pretty patient but must admit to being slightly annoyed by the year-end promotion, too. In December, I purchased an upgrade even though my Mellel 3 license was still valid. By the time Mellel 4.0 rolls out, 1/4 of the two-year validity of the upgrade will have passed by. It's not much money at all, of course, since the upgrade was only $19. But promoting version 4.0 with suggestions that it will be out "soon" and then not releasing it for 6 months is not exactly good business practice. I don't think Redlers are trying to pull one over anybody. The promotion, however, was a little misleading.

I understand the annoyance and frustration regarding Mellel 4.0. We are as impatiant as you are (probably more) to get Mellel 4.0 out of the door and into your hands. What happened is that around the end of 2016 we were very close to finishing what was our orignal Plan for Mellel 4.0 and we therefore made the announcment and promotion thinking it would be released in early 2017. Soon after that we realized that Mellel 4.0 would actually be a perfect fit for some additional, very exciting ideas, we had and decided to delay Mellel 4.0 a bit in order to get these new ideas in. In addition to that we are going through some reorganization with regards to our web site, instructional materials and marketing.
The bottom line is this:
a. Mellel 4.0 is weeks away from going into beta, the beta may require signup (not public as in the past). We will post a notification here when it is relevant.
b. We are very excited about Mellel 4.0 and we think you will be too. Whether your an old-timer, a newbie or a future customer, it will have something compelling for you.
It should go without saying that we will respect our promises and people who participated in the promotion will recive the additional time to account for the delay.

It looks like Mellel is adding more authoring features, along the line of what Scrivener does.

While those would be quite welcome, I beg the Redlers to not forget addressing long-neglected existing design issues, even if they are not as exciting. The style system is a convoluted mess: if anything will make me leave Mellel for another program, that would be it. Table editing is no less primitive than in Word, and makes me think twice before I add a table. Style exporting to Word documents is essential but nonexistent, requiring complex workaround. Basic stuff like that.

I've been using Melle for many years. It's so much better than Word, but I have to submit my research using Word with footnotes at page bottom. To get there from Mellel is difficult at best; I almost have to completely redo the footnotes. Looking forward to a direct export to .docx and the new 4.0.
