Bookends does not scan documents anymore ?!?

Post by Feanaaro »

I am experiencing this problem, apparently since the last update (4.01) in Mellel, when I click on the "scan" button in existing documents nothing happens. However, newly created documents, or old documents which previously did not have any citation, seems to work normally. How-however, if I just cut and past an old document with citations (or even a section of it which does not include citations) into a new one, it does not work.
I have tried re-linking Bookends with Mellel, I have tried reinstalling both programs fresh, and Bookends seems to work normally with other word processors (MS Word).
I am on macOS 10.12.6, and both Mellel and Bookends are up to date to the last version.

I found this very puzzling and I'd appreciate any help or suggestion.

I can second this. I noticed it last night and thought it was something to do with High Sierra but perhaps not.

For me the behaviour is the same and if I scan through menus instead of the scan button, which does nothing, it just crashes the program.

Quite disconcerting.

Same here actually. I just tried scanning through the drop-down menu, and indeed that crashes Mellel.

In awaiting a fix it would be nice to have access to the Mellel 4.0.0 dmg.

I have also run into issues with Bookends integration with the latest build of Mellel / High Sierra.

It might be a good idea to wait for the Mellel team to come up with a fix before doing any more work with bibliographies. At the least, having a good backup in place before scanning / unscanning any documents would be advisable.

Same here. I've got a PhD thesis to submit in a matter of days. A fast fix or access to the previous version would be a lifesaver.

I had what looked like a similar problem with Mellel 4 and Bookends under Sierra and saw reports about it on the Bookends site. At least part of the problem is that Mellel 4 is a distinct application from the old Mellel, so people can run both at the same time if they so choose. A consequence is that when you switch from the old Mellel to the new Mellel, Bookends is no longer automatically paired properly with the new Mellel. (On my system, that meant I could unscan old documents but I couldn't re-scan them or scan new ones.) If that's the problem others are experiencing, this should clear it up:

Launch Bookends, go to Preferences > General

In the popup menu at the top left for Word processor, Choose Mellel 4 in place of Mellel.

Restart both Mellel (4) and Bookends.

If this doesn't clear up the problem some of you are having with High Sierra (I'm not there yet myself), you should still have an operable copy of Mellel 3 unless you deleted it by hand; the installer for the new Mellel leaves it right where it was.

Thanks for the suggestion. For me, and for others I suspect, the problem is specific to Mellel 4.0.1. Mellel 4.0 was working fine.

The connection with bookends seems to be OK and others have noted that Bookends can scan new documents.

I have the same problem on two computers. One running Sierra and the other High Sierra so it seems unlikely that the OS is the culprit.

As explained in my first post, it's not a linking problem and its not an High Sierra problem.

As I have described in another post, I have the same problem with Sente, but cannot share my dissertation and my reference database. There must be some other way to detect the problem.

I was able to reproduce the problem by copying a single quote and its attached citation into a new document. I sent that to support so hopefully they find something.

We managed to isolate the bug. We will release version 4.0.2 to fix this in the next few hours. (Might take 24 in the Mac App Store). Make sure to check for updates soon.

Mellel 4.0.2 was just released, choose Mellel->Check for updates to update.
This release should fix the regression in 4.0.1 that caused crashes and misbehaviour when doing bibliography scans. Please let us know if the issue has been indeed resolved.
