Problems with autonumbering AND applying style to ONLY one section

Ive been using scrivener the last few years for my project but just upgraded to Mellel 4 and moved the text into Mellel. My reason for coming back to Mellel was to autonumber paragraphs, and also for its indexing and bibliogrphy features, which I'll need this next spring (2018).
I'm having 2 serious problems and yes, I have looked at the relevent videos multiple times.
I want to have the paragraphs in the body of the text to have continuous autonumbering, but NOT the autotitles, which I'm using as "chapter titles" even though most of the book is just 1 section. Yes I have configured the TOC tab separately, but it doesn't help. And when I generate a TOC, it add the autonumbering there as well.
The second problem is configuring the generated TOC as a separate section with a different style sheet that doesn't include autonumbering. At the end of the TOC I inserted both a section break (it didn't work) and then also a page style break (it still didn't work). When I then select the text of the TOC (which should be a separate section and appears to end with a section break icon and page break icon), and apply the default style to the selected text, it applies the default style to the entire manuscript, bit just the separate section I am selecting.
I've since figured out how to make scrivener do autonumbering through the compile process, so I could go back to scrivener for the autonumbering I need, but that won't help me with indexing or bibliography.
I understand the long-term benefits of using style sheets, but it seems Mellel needs to be more user-friendly in configuring them. I've browsed the forum and see other people with similar, still unresolved complaints.
Any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Also, have a happy Thanksgiving!
