Working with complex doc - Mellel slowing down

I am working on a document which is reasonably long and complex (about 250 pages long, lots of bibliographic references inserted with Bookends, a good number of footnotes, some cross-referencing). I have Live Bibliography turned on. I'm not surprised that Mellel is beginning to groan under the strain a little bit when performing operations such as inserting bibliographic references, or cutting and pasting footnotes. The intervals seem to be getting longer, though, and occasionally Mellel is unresponsive while such a task is being performed. I'm using a fairly new but admittedly not very powerful computer (2017 MacBook Air, basic configuration).

Does anyone have any advice for dealing with this situation?
