Adding index records: an automated way?

Hi,
I'm trying to create indexes for my next book, and I was wondering if there would be any way to add records with a preexisting list. For instance, I've got the list of all authors cited. In MS Word, there is a possibility to import this list from a distinct file, and the index tool will create a record for each item in the list. As I understand it, there's no such possibility in Mellel. But is there at least a way to create records more quickly than manually entering each record? QuickIndex does not seem to offer more flexibility on this front. Am I wrong?
Thanks for your help.
