How do I search to find all instances of where some reference has broken, as appears in text with # signs.

How do I search to find all instances of where some reference has broken

Enable "Virtual targets" in the Reference Palette and then click on the "Next Reference" button (it's the one with the circle and the downwards arrow.) Pressing the button will take you to all cross-references that have lost their target; not all at the same time, obviously, but one by one.

To fix the targets, you could also click on the Reference toolbar button or Insert > Cross Reference > Insert Reference…
Choose Existing Targets as Reference type. This will show you all existing targets. Those who are broken have a question mark. Enter a question mark into the field below the Existing targets. This will temporarily remove all the good targets from the list and only show you the bad, broken ones. You can now fix each broken target manually. When a target is fixed the corresponding cross-reference(s) will be automatically fixed too.
