how to get correct modern fractions

Post by elandbas »

how to get correct fractions? there are several ways to write fractions;

1/2 0,5 and

1
-
2

the last way of writing a fraction takes up three (3) lines and looks ugly. Working on a syllabus on how to calculate I would like to incorporate all ways of notation. I am using the benefits the extra possibilities some typefaces give. Superscript and subscript is not possible since the divider will not be in place and besides letters cannot be super- or subscripted... so formulas like a/b do not work...

it's a pain but how to solve it?

thanks for an efford

cheers

Bas, for starters you can use the unicode number forms:
-- code 00BC is 1/4
-- code 00BD is 1/2
-- code 00BE is 3/4
-- codes 2153 through 215F are 1/3, 2/3, etc.

Beyond that I suspect you're going to have to use one of the mathematical equation apps.

Some OpenType fonts support arbitrary fractions:

Not just Open Type fonts -- Times, for example, has 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4. In addition, Spell Catcher has a Convert Fractions function, so that if you type, for example, "1/4" followed by a space, it will be automatically converted into a proper fraction.

The bigger non-OpenType font families often have "exp" ("expert") fonts containing a bigger number of fractions.

But however many these are, it's still a limited number of fractions. If you need more than just a fraction here and there then, like Janet said, you will need a mathematical equation app or go straight away for LaTeX.
