2.8 is great, but . . . . 2.9 wish list
Moving this discussion over from the Redlers email group:
I'm enjoying everyone's reaction to 2.8
"Great new version, but it's just missing this one most important item ......"
And, of course, everyone's single important item is different.
I think it would be useful to list users' single most important item missing from 2.8
1. I've seen line numbering mentioned by several users
2. For me, I'm missing the changes to Sections required for side-by-side translation: independent column flow and moveable column dividers (I want the right column wider than the left).

My wish for 2.9 is on this other thread. In short, a release like Snow Leopard: no new major features, just some consolidation, streamlining and polish, so that the features we already have are made maximally useful and usable.
After that -- for 3.0 say. Hmmm. My heart says text tracking. My head says round-tripping of rtf styles.

What I'm looking forward to most is the ability the define the language of a paragraph so that spell checking is not a global option anymore. Besides that I'd like to see improved bibliographic options: Zotero support and the ability to have multiple bibliographies in one document.

Better indexing support (TOC, indexes and bibliography). As much as I've harped on about automated figure placement in the past, I think indexing is more of a core need.

I support this request. Very useful for academic papers.simifilm wrote:What I'm looking forward to most is the ability the define the language of a paragraph so that spell checking is not a global option anymore.

Indexing, please. I've been waiting a long time now for a most important need.

Are there any plans for rounded corners on tables or sections (border or background color)? This would make Mellel much more useful in producing attractive layout-style pages, such as for magazines and flyers.
Maybe there is already a way and I haven't found it?

I second simifilm's requests: Zotero intergration and better multilingual spellchecking would be fantastic.

You know, there's some cleaning up and unifying in terms of styles that really needs doing too. Like being able to tie styles to (even and odd) page breaks, tieing page layout styles to actually change page size and margins, assigning language styles to paragraph styles, removing the arbitrary restrictions on number and names of character style variations ...

Great update, but...
...the Small Caps Open Type feature still ignores uppercase characters. How long have we been discussing this?

That's because they're accessing the wrong OpenType table for small caps. Instead of the "smcp" table for "Small Caps", Mellel only looks at the table for "All Small Caps" (and at the moment I can't seem to find the identifier for that particular table ...).signinstranger wrote:Great update, but...

This is a fault in Mellel, and a gap in its OpenType implementation that causes great need for workaround. This error has been mentioned frequently, and for many years ... but still no comment it has been made ...

Regarding the defective small caps implementation (and many other small but crucial points) those of you who are on the beta programme know what to do...
