Producing clickable DOIs in a PDF

Post by joseph_anton »

The latest guidance from the Modern Language Association is that DOIs are to be preferred to URLs whenever they are available, as they are more likely to still be accessible many years from now. I've been collecting DOIs as I go along and have set up a format in Bookends that will output the DOI rather than the URL in my Works Cited if it is present. The only problem with this is that, unlike the URLs, it's not possible to click on the DOI when I export to PDF - it's necessary to copy and paste the information to bring up the original. Here's an example of an entry in my bibliography:

Cohn, Bernard S. “Representing Authority in Victorian India.” The Invention of Tradition. Edited by E. J. Hobsbawm and T. O. Ranger. Cambridge: UP, 2012. Cambridge Core, doi:10.1017/CBO9781107295636.005.

A clickable version of this would be: https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781107295636.005

I wonder if there is any smart way of telling Mellel to convert the DOIs into clickable URLs? A complicating factor is that MLA Style also now says that elements such as "http://" and "https://" should not appear in a bibliography.
