Problem with direction when using English

Post by shades »

About two months ago, Mellel presented a curious and frustrating problem. When I type (in English) the direction is fine for reading—except for using punctuation. When I enter period, comma, etc. normally it should show up at the end of the sentence (which it has done for 8 years). However, with latest upgrade, the punctuation mark shows on the left side, and if I add another, it is added there (left-aligned, but also left direction). I have tried every possible combination with other templates, and nothing solves this. Basically Mellel is unusable to me

I tried to type (both in Swedish and English), and all the punctuations worked just fine. No problems whatsoever with neither commas nor periods behave odd in my texts.

I have the latest update of Mellel, the latest macOS on my MBP retina 2012.

Rich, a little more info please:

which languages are you using and how are they defined?
-- in file/document setup what is the binding direction?
-- in the character palette/options, which script are you using? which direction has been set?

which font(s) are involved?
-- I hope not Times New Roman which is notoriously buggy in some versions.

If you could send a short example, that might help us identify the problem.

Thank you, Janet.

It's going to take me a couple days to get back to this, I injured my back and knee in a fall, and I am battling a severe chest cold.

As I was thinking about this, my copy of Mellel on my laptop works perfectly, so I will be able to compare and with your suggestions/questions, it looks like I will be able to get it going again.

Thank you

Well after the injury, I have been in the hospital, pneumonia, infection, severe bone and muscle pain in both hands (inside and out)... so I'm just now getting back to life. But not fully functional.

Still taking tests of my body...

But I spent a little time today and thought through this. I found the problem.

In the character palette, I had "Body" and in lower right corner of the character attributes page under "Open Type," at some point that was changed to Hebrew and direction was set for right-to-left. I don't remember doing it. But once I switched to English and set "Default" for direction, the problem disappeared.

Whew!
