Running Mellel 2.7.1 Build 3 here on a Snow Leopard 10.6.1 macbook, 4GB of RAM.
I was working on a 2-page document with text, two small tables and one image (a screenshot). Shortly upon inserting the image into the file, a message window popped up ("rendering document" or something similar), my hard disk started churning for a couple o minutes, and eventually Mellel crashed.
The crash report suggests a kernel protection failure, which sounds quite serious.
I have a crash report for any brave souls who are interested.
Now, this is my second day of evaluating Mellel. Should I consider myself unlucky or are crashes this frequent with Mellel? Considering that my dissertation will include lots of images, should I opt for another word processor, perhaps one with a longer history of handling image-type objects (e.g. Pages)? Needless to say, stability is paramount when writing a dissertation!
Thank you very much for your advice.

That's very unlucky. In my several-year experience with Mellel, I can probably count the number of Mellel crashes on less than ten fingers. Having said that, if your document repeatedly makes Mellel crash, you may have found a bug. You should probably send a message using the support form on the Mellel website.
