I find the purple background color of citations very distracting.
Is there any way to change the color to, let's say, light gray?
I wonder what other forum members think about this. Perhaps it's just a matter of habituation…

This color can't be changed at the moment. However, I share your interest on whether or not more people find this disturbing.

I find this a little disturbing too. All is grey or blue in Mellel, and citations are purple. It is weird.
Light gray like auto titles would be a nice solution.
