Export Outline to PDF

Post by Stotty »

When I export my document to a PDF, my outline is lost. Is there any ay of keeping my outline so people can navigate my document by the outline headings once it becomes a PDF? When I export to PDF I would like my document to be completely like for like.

The subject has already been discussed, and as far as I remember the answer is no, but if you make a ToC it will be active in your pdf provided you have written your document in Mellel 4, not earlier.

Okay I tried it and it seems adequate. It would, however, be a terrific improvement if the outline were to remain in tact when transported to a PDF.

This happens when you export to an external disk.

If you export to your Desktop and make sure all export options are enabled in the upcoming dialog, then the outline is exported correctly. No need to additionally create a TOC.

This is not related to external/internal disk. You simply need to export via File->Export and not via the print dialog. Exporting to PDF via the print dialog doesn't allow Mellel to add the outline to the PDF document.

Hmm, do you mean that we should export through the file-export menu or the print dialogue? Your answer is a little bit of a contradiction when you write »not via the print dialog» and »via the print dialog does allow Mellel to add …».

I meant to write "doesn't allow" and wrote "does allow". I corrected my original post.

I thought it was part of those recent PDFkit bugs in macOS 10.12 that, among other things, have affected Bookends. See for example the penultimate post from Jon here:
https://www.sonnysoftware.com/phpBB3/vi ... f=2&t=4259

If the saving path is irrelevant, then maybe I have a local problem or it's my configuration, because if I export to an *external* disk as PDF (via File-> Export ) the Outline is NEVER retained. However, if it's exported to the active local disk then everything is fine. Tested with Preview, PDF Expert and PDFpenPro.
My configuration: MacBook Pro 2010, macOS 10.12.6 and Mellel 4.1

It would be helpful if macsailor and others would be so kind and make a similar test with Mellel.

PS
The problem does not occur in Nisus Writer Pro.

I did some tests and it looks like there is an issue with exporting PDFs in general to an external disk. This is not "by design" but some sort of bug in Mellel or in the system (and if the system is to blame then we will probably need to find a work-around). I don't recall that this issue was reported to us but it would really be great if you never assume that we know about it or that it is by design.
Please make sure to always let us know about such issue, especially if you have them so isolated (works on internal disk, doesn't work on external - this is gold).
At any rate, I stand corrected and we will investigate and fix this asap.
