Hi. For several years I have had this problem. My Mac is set in system preferences to use British English for the spellcheck. Mellel is also set to use British English but persistently uses the American spelling, flagging "realise" as an error which it most certainly is not — we do not spell realise with a "z" here in Britain. This happens with a lot of words, so Mellel is definitely using the US English dictionary even though in preferences it claims it is using the British one. Does anybody know what causes this and how to fix it?
I am running the latest version of Mellel on Mac OS Monterey. Pages and most of my other applications correctly flag "realize" as an error and pass "realise" as correct, which is what I would like Mellel to do!

Hello Fire Angel,
Did you perhaps forget to select and assign the text English (UK) in the Character pane?
I have just done that, and Mellel flags realize as wrong.

Re: Mellel stubbornly using wrong spellcheck language.
Thank you, that was a quick response!
I have never done that because I never found out it was required until your post made it clear. Now I understand how that works I can set it in each document I want spellchecked that way.
Thanks again, that really helps to remove a frustration I have had for the last few days.
Is there a way to change the default? I would really like that setting to be something I have to think about only once, or only when I want to write or check in another language.

Make sure your Default template has Character Styles with the attribute English (UK).Is there a way to change the default? I would really like that setting to be something I have to think about only once
If Paragraph Styles in your Default template are based on such Character Styles, then you shouldn't have this problem anymore.

Actaully, you don't need to assign the language in the character style to set a default (although it will work too). The easierst way is to set the desired language as the default in Mellel's settings (previously "Preferences")
1. Choose Mellel > Settings
2. Click on the "Language" tab.
3. Locate the desired language in the list and select it
4. Check the "Make Default" checkbox.
