From the release notes:
Statistics palette will treat digit sequences separated by number separators (comma, period, colon etc) as single words (Jakob Vicari)
That is much appreciated.

But there is still no option for hyphenated expressions to be counted as a single term in the stats display.

Instead, I have to find and remove hyphens, jot down the word count, and quickly undo the find/remove before it is automatically saved.

Because this process involves an increased risk, or increased stuffing about by creating duplicate expendible files, I still have no accurate word count for the thesis I have just submitted.

Why, I wonder, is this such a problem when it doesn't need to be? Are hyphens really such an abomination?

Not everything hyphenated is a single word. Every word processor has to make a choice here: undercount or overcount. Personally I prefer it the way it is now, overcounting a bit.
