Re: Looking for your input regarding Mellel's Factory templates

The set of templates should prioritize being useful to Mellel users. My sense, which might be quite wrong, is that the focus should be on "serious" writers who prepare technical and nontechnical books and reports, including dissertations, and journal articles. If so, then I would look to what publis...

Re: MathType and Catalina: the New Add-In and Editing Old Equations

This is an update as of June 26, 2021 on using MathType via Office 365 and Big Sur. It may soon become outdated. I updated my iMac to Big Sur, opened Word, added the new MathType add-in, wrote some equations, and copied/pasted to Mellel. I had to adjust vertical position by 1 point to make things lo...

Re: MathType and Catalina

I tested copying to Mellel a MathType equation from the new Microsoft Word 365 Add-in. If added in-line with text, the result is offset by a couple of points, which can be adjusted by recognizing the the equation is a picture, editing the picture (pencil icon), and changing position downward. In my ...

Re: Exporting Mellel doc with footnotes, page numbers to Word

I have exported a number of 100-page complex documents to Word successfully, including tables with colored cells, figures, footnotes, endnotes, and cross references. I had a few puzzlers along the way, but nothing profound. It would be good for those of us who have done so to collect tips for others...

Re: MathType and Catalina

David, my current analysis is as follows: 1. If I am being practical , then --using Word 365 to create or edit equations for Mellel will be relatively painless for me since I have Office 365 anyway --to edit pre-existing MathType equations, the only solution I know of is to create a virtual machine ...

Re: MathType and Catalina

Wiris has announced its MathType "solution" for Mac Users. It will depend on using Word 365. They say that MathType 8 for Catalina/Big Sur will not happen "in the foreseeable future" because they see the way ahead for MathType as being embedded as an Add-in or Add-on. No editing of equations from ol...

Also, I suggest allowing note streams attached to individual tables and figures.

Re: Half-arsed implementation of footnotes

This ties into a larger issue. It is often very useful and even necessary to collect both notes and references at the end of chapters, as with an edited or otherwise modular book. Thus, in thinking about how to address the notes feature in Mellel, Eyal should think also about Bookends.

Re: File format for greatest longevity

Icelander, I experimented with Libre Office today in opening a few old Word files. Results varied from near-perfect to not correctly capturing the original figures. One from 1989 looks quite good, including line drawings . I was able to make a pdf, so I'm covered that way, but to what do you suggest...

Re: File format for greatest longevity

Icelander, I’ve used Libre Office for conversion, but forget whether it worked for graphics and equations. If so, that’s great. I will convert a bunch of files when I get a little time. My experience with export to .docx has also been very good, especially with two points that may still not be docum...

Re: File format for greatest longevity

I only wish that I had made pdfs of all the Word documents that I wrote back in the 1980s and 1990s. Since there now exist good pdf to Word converters, I'd be in good shape.

Advice on Collaborating with Track Changes

I still have scars from working with Word manuscripts that went through multiple collaborators sequentially. Crashes, file corruption, and other ugly stuff. Is anyone aware of problems when doing so with Mellel? Or, to put it differently, do folks have suggestions or cautions about writing in Mellel...

Re: Big Sur - is it OK to upgrade

If you need equations in your documents, then both Catalina and Big Sur are problems. MathType is supposed to be developing a version that will work, but that is not promised until sometime in 2021.

Re: Keeping caption and figure together

I have done further checking. I ran into problems previously when I inserted images in pdf format (making it possible for publishers to edit figures without having my original drawing-program files). As I recall, this created problems with some journals because they would translate the pdfs into Wor...
