Another good face (especially for math and sciences) would be the standard Computer Modern. It's the standard/default font for TeX, and has excellent support for equations and technical notations. I have installed Mellel 2.6.2 on MacOS X now.
The same difference, in 2.6.2 I get the ligature, in 2.8.2 I don't get it.
