Re: Half-arsed implementation of footnotes

This ties into a larger issue. It is often very useful and even necessary to collect both notes and references at the end of chapters, as with an edited or otherwise modular book. Thus, in thinking about how to address the notes feature in Mellel, Eyal should think also about Bookends.

Re: File format for greatest longevity

Icelander, I experimented with Libre Office today in opening a few old Word files. Results varied from near-perfect to not correctly capturing the original figures. One from 1989 looks quite good, including line drawings . I was able to make a pdf, so I'm covered that way, but to what do you suggest...

Re: File format for greatest longevity

Icelander, I’ve used Libre Office for conversion, but forget whether it worked for graphics and equations. If so, that’s great. I will convert a bunch of files when I get a little time. My experience with export to .docx has also been very good, especially with two points that may still not be docum...

Re: File format for greatest longevity

I only wish that I had made pdfs of all the Word documents that I wrote back in the 1980s and 1990s. Since there now exist good pdf to Word converters, I'd be in good shape.

Advice on Collaborating with Track Changes

I still have scars from working with Word manuscripts that went through multiple collaborators sequentially. Crashes, file corruption, and other ugly stuff. Is anyone aware of problems when doing so with Mellel? Or, to put it differently, do folks have suggestions or cautions about writing in Mellel...

Eyal, although I never met Ori "live," I am devastated because of getting to know the two of you so well through cyberspace. I can only offer my condolences.

Re: Big Sur - is it OK to upgrade

If you need equations in your documents, then both Catalina and Big Sur are problems. MathType is supposed to be developing a version that will work, but that is not promised until sometime in 2021.

Re: Keeping caption and figure together

I have done further checking. I ran into problems previously when I inserted images in pdf format (making it possible for publishers to edit figures without having my original drawing-program files). As I recall, this created problems with some journals because they would translate the pdfs into Wor...

Re: Keeping caption and figure together

Wow, I never thought of that! Is this effect a bug or a feature? I don't understand the logic that must be driving this. It may be compelling. For years, I have used in-line wrapped figures because, when I have not, I have run into very annoying problems with exported versions of the manuscript. I d...

Re: Keeping caption and figure together

Ah, so you want the caption to be *above* the figure, now I understand. :–) There is a setting "Keep with next", where one specifies the number of lines in the next paragraph, but this does not seem to work when the next paragraph is an image. The Keep-with-next-field in the Paragraph sty...

Re: Keeping caption and figure together

Sorry, I apparently did not explain well. Here's the picture Text... (paragraph style) Figure Caption (a tag flow with Figure Caption style) Image (e.g., a .png) (Figure Placement style) Text (paragraph style) If all of this appears low on a page, then Mellel may insert a page break between Figure C...

Keeping caption and figure together

I have an auto-title and style for Figure Title . The style specifies next paragraph as Figure Placement . I use this to insert figures that are typically .png images. How do I assure that the figure title and image remain together, rather than separated by a page break? There is a setting "Kee...

Selective acceptance of changes

As of now, if one selects a bunch of text and specifies that changes within the selection be accepted, this does not cause changes to be accepted within notes occurring in the selected text. Instead, it seems that one must select the notes one by one to accept changes. Two questions: 1. Would it be ...
