Big Sur - is it OK to upgrade

Mellel seems to work fine, but that's not really a scientific analysis. Did I screw up and upgrade too quickly?

I've got both a fresh backup mirror and Time Machine runs all the time. I can retreat if I need.

Re: File format for greatest longevity

Here's my take - rtf, docx, epub, pdf and any format that is documented and used by multiple vendors is reasonably safe. On the other hand, you can hand-translate ASCII by examining individual bytes and converting. If I had to guess, I'd say that ASCII will endure through the end of mankind. Even if...

Re: TOC alignment

Oh, happy day! I figured out the tab situation. If you hover over a tab and get the right-and-left arrow mouse pointer, you can click and drag the tab to a new position. If you click and drag it down to below the ruler, the tab is deleted. If you click on the tab, when the mouse has that right-left ...

Re: alignment problems

I think I figured out what you're seeing and I can duplicate it, assuming I understand correctly. Best of luck with your pneumonia, by the way. When I was a kid i nearly died from respiratory problems. The only memory I have from those days is a dim memory of being in an oxygen tent in a hospital be...

Re: TOC alignment

Ok, I figured it out. The tab stops set in the TOC format are not the tab stops in the document at large. The auto-flow headings were running out of tab stops on some of the levels. Is there a way to remove a tab stop? I can see how to create tab stops at regular intervals, but it appears that once ...

TOC alignment

I have a document with some auto titles using right justification. This is in an English left-to-right document. I’ve got all my auto-titles set to use a different format. The right-justified auto-titles are right justified in the TOC. Any suggestions where I should look? One idea would be to lose t...

Re: alignment problems

This sounds similar to something I found. I’m not at my computer to test right now, but I believe Mellel wil not allow margins inside of tabs.

Does that sound like what you’re seeing, a tab moving inside a margin?

Re: Feature request: Text wrap around tables

It's not a complete substitute, but you may find some utility in adding a section break, setting the new section to two columns with the "balanced" feature turned off, and you can put a table in the right hand column. Or, come to think of it, the left column with a column break to push the text over...

Re: reflowable epub

That was it. Once I stripped out the extra newlines, all was well in the exported epub. Redemption in one Python statement, assuming =-= didn't appear in the text of Masque of the Red Death: open('masque1.txt', 'wt').write(open('masque.txt', 'rt').read().replace('\n\n', '=-=').replace('\n', ' ').rep...

Re: reflowable epub

Stop the presses, I think I know what must have happened. I used some sample text from Project Gutenberg to test epub export, and I'm morally certain I imported newlines at the end of every line in the text. I'm not where I can test right now, but thought I'd post this in case anyone thought the fau...

Re: reflowable epub

Ok, that's actually better for my purposes, anyway.

I notice that each line in the output I'm getting is bracketed in a "p" tag, and that's why I thought it wasn't reflowable.

The default novel template may help, too. I'll experiment further.

reflowable epub

First up, I don't know much about epub format, but I'm trying to learn.

Is there a way to generate a reflowable epub document with Mellel?

The fixed layout is superior for control of things like tables, but for a text only presentation, reflowable text has some appeal.

Is that an option?

Re: Some lines are hidden

Just curious, since I'm starting to work on something that will be of some size.

Do you see that phenomena in both compact and Mellel views?

Re: Auto-titles and paragraph-character styles

(Hopefully this isn't a duplicate post - I had to go through a login cycle after I wrote this.) The diamond styles may seem mysterious, but I don't think they need to be. I struggled with Mellel styles initially, then realized I was making mountains out of styled molehills. What the diamond means is...
