Re: Mellel vs. MS Word--major advantages of Mellel

My situation is very similar to yours. I, too, often mix Chinese and Western language in my academic writing. Thus far, I have not exchanged a large number of files with colleagues. When I need to, however, I export to .rtf, then open the file in Word and save it as a .doc file. Excuse me, but why ...

Well, I'm all for saving any unnecessary steps in the process. Guess I'm conflating problems importing Word files directly into Mellel (which does not work so well) with exporting them as .rtf or .docs. That being said, exporting still poses some problems for me with Chinese. The characters display ...

Re: Mellel vs. MS Word--major advantages of Mellel

I've yet to find anyplace on the website or in the forums that will tell me what the major advantages of switching from MSWord to Mellel are. I'm a professor who must compose documents mixing Chinese and various Western languages and be able to send them without hitch to numerous Windows, and MSWor...

Re: Apple's new version of Pages just came out. Whadda ya th

They added more word processing features now, like change tracking, instead of mainly just having page layout functions. Pages can't do nearly everything that Mellel does, but I think Mellel better keep on its toes. I must admit being much more impressed with Pages as a wp than when it first came o...

Word comment field > Mellel?

Sorry if this has been discussed already. I was wondering if it is at all possible to convert Word Comment fields to Mellel note streams. This is really the only feature I miss about Word; it's also one of the most important for sharing work with colleagues. At this point I'm resigned to using Word ...

I second this, too, as it's one of the few things I miss about Word. Easy enough to apply styles but quicker to determine the style before pasting takes place. Yes, I have noticed other applications adding the "paste and match style" option.

Has MS confirmed this? Last I heard, it was expected that the Mac version wouldn't be out until the end of the year. It was, however, just speculation. Would hate to wait that long.

Are you using the latest version of StuffitExpander? I am and always get a warning message when a download commences. In the end, there's no issue with the actual .zip file, just StuffitExpander.

Perhaps there is another issue affecting your downloads, however.

Link from forum to Mellel homepage?

Forgive me if I missed it, but it would be nice to have a link from the forum page here to the Mellel homepage. The Bookends forum does this by linking the icon in the upper left-hand corner to Sonny Software's homepage.

Are you writing in the sciences or humanities? I tried out both Bookends and Sente and ended up going with the former for many reasons. The citations in Sente (for the humanities) needed too much tweaking. Loved the interface in Sente, but Bookends overall suited my needs much better. Jon at Sonny S...

Replying to the original post: I don't think Word is the inspiration, so much as classic Nisus Writer and FrameMaker, both of which in their own way didn't suck (for their era). I believe Word 5 couldn't do a lot of the things I've listed, and while modern Word can do almost everything there it's b...
